White River is a very important river in Indiana. It is a watershed for over one-third of all the land in the state. In the very early days, it was a way for Indians to get food, expand their hunting areas, and carry goods (skins, pelts, hides, corn, fish, tools, etc.) for trade. It was utilized for transportation for early settlers heading west. The Lafayette Trace is a trail that runs alongside the White River for a long distance which was used by a great many settlers heading west across the country hundreds of years ago.
